BK. Ezra Pound

117. Teele, Roy E. ‘The Japanese Translations’. Texas Quarterly 10/4 (1967): 61-66.

Rather oddly divides Pound’s ‘Japanese translations’ into two categories, ‘the haiku’ and work with the nô. Leaving aside that Pound’s work with ‘hokku-like’ verse was not by any standard definition ‘translation’, the discussion of it here is uninspired, but Teele is on surer ground with the nô, and suggests that in spite of errors in ‘literal translation’ the versions in ‘Noh’ (24) achieve at their best ‘something of the effect of the original’.
