BK. Ezra Pound95. Orage, A. R. ‘The No-Drama’. In The Art of Reading. New York: Farrar and Rinehart, 1930.Orage, Pound’s friend and editor of New Age, took a dim view of the versions of the nô: ‘Mr. Pound does his best to make [the plays] intelligible, and even to link them with his own little cult of imagism; but I understand them quite as little as their modern twig. The plays have atmosphere, and many of the speeches are charming, but head or tail of the whole I cannot make. Mix Maeterlinck with Mr. Pound under the influence of Mr. Yeats, and stir with modern spiritualism, and the result . . . is that of the No-dramas’ (p. 147). Includes passing reference to Stopes’s collection on the nô (see D23).
