BD. Edmund Blunden
53. [Blunden]. ‘British Embassy, Tokyo’.
Review of Behind the Japanese Mask, by Robert Craigie. TLS,
9 March 1946, p. 112.
Craigie was the British Ambassador to Japan from 1937 until
the outbreak of war with the United States and Britain. Blunden finds
in his recollection of the years a ‘steady and natural excellence’,
for the work ‘does not reduce the exceedingly varied life of Japan
to one black and cruel meaning’.
