Sekine’s knowledge of the nô is unassailable,
and in evidence here. The work offers a cogent comparative analysis of
the classical form and Yeats’s drama indebted to it. The dismissal
of the ‘dance plays’ on grounds that they do not achieve the
effects of their Japanese progenitors, however, misunderstands Yeats’s
intentions.
