BL. W. B. Yeats

101. Sharp, William L. ‘W. B. Yeats: A Poet Not in the Theatre’. Tulane Drama Review 4/2 (1959): 67-82.

Argues that Yeats’s Four Plays for Dancers (17) fail as drama because characters are not clearly delineated, in contrast both to the European tradition and to the nô: ‘for all its formalism the Noh drama is alive, and packed with emotional excitement that is defined by what is done and said, while Yeats’s Plays for Dancers remains surprisingly dead and unilluminating’.
