BL. W. B. Yeats

87. Nane, Jirô. Nô no tenkai (The development of the nô). Tokyo: Hinoki shoten, 1954.

Preceding Nane’s translation of At the Hawk’s Well (12) and The Only Jealousy of Emer (14b) is a lengthy introduction to the plays that is perhaps the first work in Japanese to see in Yeats’s interest in the form something more than Yeats himself had discussed in ‘Certain Noble Plays of Japan’ (11). Finds the essence of the nô in its subtle symbology, and argues that Yeats intuited this and adapted it in his plays for dancers.
