BL. W. B. Yeats8. ‘The Tragic Theatre’. The Mask 3 (October 1910): 77-81.Yeats’s essay itself mentions Japan only in passing, and not in connection with the nô, but Ellis (257), in an attempt to show that Yeats would have known of the nô before his introduction to it by Pound, notes that he hardly could have missed details about the form in this issue of Craig’s Mask, which includes three illustrations from Marcelle Hinckes’ The Japanese Dance, a review of which (pp. 90-91) discusses the nô; the illustration from Hinckes on the page preceding Yeats’s essay is of ‘Benkei on the Bridge’, and is identified as a ‘nô dance’.
