Blunden recalls his friend Saitô Takeshi (Ap) and early memories of Japan, to ‘begin to clarify . . . what it means to have lived, however imperfectly’, in the country. His decision to accept the professorship at Tokyo Imperial University has influenced all his ‘doings and thinkings since’, and Japan itself has been among the ‘chief influences’ in his life.
