BD. Edmund Blunden

63. [Blunden]. ‘Japanese Journey’. Review of The First Voyage of the English in Japan, by John Saris, edited by Takanobu Ôtsuka. TLS, 20 May 1949, p. 327.

Saris (ca. 1580-1646), Captain of the British East India Company ship Clove, arrived in Japan on 11 June 1613, and with the help of William Adams (Ap) obtained permission to establish an English factory at Hirado. Blunden traces the history of Saris’s 1613 manuscript about his journey to Japan and finds Ôtsuka’s edition skilful and sound.
