Blunden finds Vines’s (Ap) work ‘infinitely more welcome than the majority’ of books on Japan, and Beard’s ‘largely rhetorical’ and more ‘romantic than realistic’. Notes that in Japan ‘the contest between nationalist emotion (or reason) and foreign styles sometimes flares up’. See also 42d.
