Oliver Herford (1863-1935) was an illustrator and author of light verse best remembered today for witticisms and epigrams that appear in virtually all modern dictionaries of quotation. Among many other works he was author of Artful Antiks (1888), An Alphabet of Celebrities (1899), The Fairy-God-Mother-in-Law (1905), and A Little Book of Bores (1906). ‘Japanesque’ appeared in the 1919 edition of Modern American Poetry, edited by Louis Untermeyer (New York: Harcourt, Brace, and Howe).
